NASA has named the crew for Artemis III, the mission planned for 2027 that aims to put astronauts back on the surface of the Moon. Those names made headlines around the world. But the people who will plan and run the missions after that one, in the 2030s and 2040s, are not famous yet. Most of them are sitting in classrooms today, somewhere between the ages of six and seventeen.
Some of them are here in the UAE. That is not a hopeful slogan. It is just how careers in engineering have always worked, and it is worth thinking about if you are a parent weighing up what your child does after school this term.
What "the Artemis generation" actually means
You may have heard the phrase. It describes the children growing up now who will become the engineers, coders and scientists behind the next era of space exploration. It sounds grand, and the long-term goal is grand. But the day-to-day reality is ordinary in the best way. Nobody is born knowing how to design a lunar lander. People get there one small, practical step at a time.
An astronaut you see on the news did not start with a rocket. They started with a curiosity about how things work, then learned to wire something up, then learned to write code that made it move, then studied harder versions of the same ideas at university, then joined a team that built real machines. The distance from a child's first robot to a working spacecraft is long, but the road is clear, and every part of it is learnable.
The first steps are smaller than parents expect
Here is the honest version of the path, with no skipped magic in the middle:
- A child gets curious and builds something small that actually works, like a sensor that reacts to light or a robot that follows a line.
- They learn a little code, enough to make the thing behave on purpose rather than by accident.
- They hit a problem, get it wrong a few times, and fix it. This is the part that matters most.
- They take maths and physics seriously at school, because now those subjects have an obvious point.
- They study engineering, computer science or a related field at university.
- They join industry, the space sector among many others, and work on real systems with a real team.
The same skills sit underneath all of it. Reading a sensor. Controlling a motor. Writing logic that does not break. Working out why something stopped and putting it right. A child who learns these on a small board in Dubai is learning the genuine foundation, not a watered-down version of it.
The skills that run a Moon mission and the skills that make a toy robot avoid a wall are the same skills, sized differently. Sensors in, decision made, motor out. A child who understands that loop has started the real journey.
What this looks like in our classroom
In our IoT and robotics programme, children do not watch slideshows about space. They build. Using real hardware, the same families of components engineers use, they wire up sensors and small computers and make them do something on purpose.
A typical project includes a few of these:
- An Arduino or ESP32 board: the small brain that reads inputs and decides what to do, the same logic a spacecraft computer follows at a far larger scale.
- Sensors: for light, distance, temperature or movement, so the project can react to the world around it rather than just sit there.
- Motors and parts that move: so a decision in the code turns into an action you can watch.
- A few lines of code: written by the child, tested by the child, and fixed by the child when it misbehaves.
When a robot finally turns the right way because a child changed one line of code, you can see the understanding arrive. That moment is the whole point. It is the same satisfaction an engineer feels when a system finally does what it should, just earlier in the story.

Why hands-on matters more than memorising
Plenty of children can name the planets. Far fewer have built something that senses, decides and acts, then watched it fail and worked out why. That second kind of learning is what engineering is actually made of, and it is hard to get from a worksheet.
Your child does not need to be top of the maths class to begin. Curiosity and a willingness to try the same thing twice are enough. We keep the groups small so every child has their own hardware in front of them and their own hands on the build, rather than watching one confident child do the work. That is deliberate. The whole skill lives in the doing.
How the classes fit your week
We teach two ways. Children across the UAE join live online sessions, with a teacher watching their screen and guiding each step, so a child in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi builds the same project as one in our Dubai room. The honest promise
No class can promise your child a seat on a rocket. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What an early start in robotics and coding genuinely does is open the door and keep it open. It gives a child the foundation, the habits and the confidence to choose engineering later, if that is where their curiosity leads. Some will go into space work. Many will go into other fields that need exactly the same thinking. None of them are worse off for learning to build.
The crew flying to the Moon in 2027 were children once, fiddling with how things work. The people who run the missions after them are children now. The first step is small, practical, and closer than it sounds.
