The UAE Is Heading to the Moon. Should Your Child Start STEM Now?

In January 2025 the UAE signed an agreement to join NASA's Lunar Gateway, a small space station that will orbit the Moon. The aim, in time, is to send an Emirati astronaut around it. Read that sentence again. A child living in Dubai today could grow up to be part of that.

It is easy to file that news under things that happen to other people, far away. But this is happening here, to this country, in your child's lifetime. So the honest question for a parent is not whether the Moon is exciting. It is what you do about it.

This is not a far-off dream anymore

The UAE already has four astronauts. Dr Sultan AlNeyadi completed the longest Arab space mission, six months aboard the International Space Station. Nora AlMatrooshi is the first Arab woman to train as an astronaut. These are not characters from a film. They are people who went through the training, did the work, and now carry the country's name into orbit.

What that tells a child growing up here is simple and powerful. The path is open. The country is signing the agreements and putting its own people on the journey. The seats are not all spoken for. Somewhere in a school in Dubai or Sharjah right now is a child who will help build the next part of this.

Where it really starts, and where it does not

Here is the part I want to be straight about. Signing your child up for a class does not buy them a seat on a rocket. Nobody can promise that, and you should be wary of anyone who tries.

What it does is far more useful. It starts the thing every engineer, scientist and astronaut started with, which is curiosity, plus the habit of building something with your own hands and fixing it when it goes wrong. That is the real first step. Not a guarantee. A foundation.

No astronaut began with a mission. They began with a question and something to take apart. The Moon ambition gives a child a reason to start. The hands-on building is what actually carries them forward.

What a child actually does in class

A space station that orbits the Moon sounds impossibly grand. But strip it back and it runs on the same building blocks a child can hold. Sensors that notice things. A small computer that decides what to do. Motors that make something happen. We teach those blocks directly, with real parts, not pictures of parts.

None of this requires a child to be top of the maths class. It needs a bit of patience and a willingness to try the wire in the wrong hole and then the right one. We keep the groups small, so every child has the hardware in their own hands rather than watching someone else have all the fun.

Small machines, the same logic as the big ones

When a child builds a little rover that senses a wall and steers around it, they are using the same idea a real space machine uses to feel its way across the surface of the Moon. Sense, decide, move. The scale is worlds apart. The thinking underneath is the same one they just held on a table in Dubai.

That is the quiet thing these classes do. A child stops seeing space technology as magic done by other people, and starts seeing it as a bigger version of something they made work themselves. Once that switch flips, the news about the Lunar Gateway lands differently. It stops being a headline and becomes a possibility.

Why now, and not later

Parents often wonder whether to wait until a child is older and surer of what they like. I understand the instinct. But there is a good case for starting while a child is still openly curious and not yet worried about looking clever in front of the class.

  1. The interest is fresh. A child of eight who builds a working robot carries that confidence for years.
  2. The skills stack slowly, session by session, not crammed before an exam.
  3. The timing fits the country. The UAE is investing in space right now, and a child starting now grows up alongside it.

How the classes fit your week

Children right across the UAE join live online sessions, with a teacher watching their screen and guiding them step by step, so a child in Abu Dhabi or Ras Al Khaimah builds the same project as one in our Dubai room. For families who prefer it, we run in-person sessions here in Dubai. In the hot months that is a real comfort, proper hardware and proper teaching, indoors and out of the heat. There are weekend and after-school batches, so a class fits around school rather than fighting it, with children joining from age six up to seventeen.

The Lunar Gateway will take years to build, and an Emirati journey around the Moon longer still. But the children who will one day work on missions like that are at school right now, somewhere in this country, and the ones who get there will be those who started early with their hands on real machines.

You cannot promise your child the Moon. Nobody can. What you can give them is the first step, the curiosity and the building, on a table in Dubai this term. The rest is up to them, and the country is clearly betting it is possible.
