On 20 June this year, a spacecraft called SMILE reached its science orbit. It is a joint European and Chinese mission, and its job is to watch something we cannot see with our own eyes: how the solar wind streaming off the Sun pushes against Earth's magnetic shield. That meeting of wind and shield has a name. Scientists call it space weather.
It sounds far away, and the spacecraft itself is. But the idea behind it is closer to home than you would think, and it is something your child can build a small version of on a table in Dubai. SMILE is, at heart, a sensor keeping watch on our planet. We do the same thing down here, with networks of sensors in space and on the ground, all reporting back what they notice.
What SMILE is actually watching
The Sun does not just give us light and warmth. It also throws out a constant stream of charged particles, the solar wind, in every direction. Earth has a magnetic field around it that acts like a shield, deflecting most of that wind so it does not reach the ground. Where the wind meets the shield, things get busy, and that is the region SMILE was built to study.
The mission cannot fix anything up there. It is not meant to. Its whole purpose is to sense, to measure, and to send the readings back so people on the ground understand what is happening. Watch, measure, report. Hold on to that loop, because it is exactly what your child learns to build.
The same watching, much closer to the ground
We do not only keep watch on our planet from space. There are sensors on the ground doing the same work, all the time. Some measure the air for dust and pollution. Some track temperature and humidity. Some watch for movement, or light, or water. None of them is clever on its own. Each one notices one thing and passes the reading along to somewhere it can be seen and used.
That is the Internet of Things, and it is the ground-level cousin of a space mission like SMILE. We wrote more about that connection, from orbit down to the smart home, in our piece on satellites and the smart home. The scale changes enormously, but the basic idea does not move.
A spacecraft watching the solar wind and a small sensor watching the air in your kitchen run on the very same loop: notice something real, measure it, and report the reading somewhere a person can act on it. Teach a child that one sentence and a lot of science falls into place.
What your child actually builds in class
Talking about sensors only carries a child so far. It clicks the moment they make a real one work themselves. In our IoT and robotics programme, an early project has a child build their own little watching station. They wire a sensor to a small board, an Arduino or an ESP32, a tiny computer with wireless built in. Then they make it send its readings to a phone or a dashboard. Here is the loop they build, the same one SMILE runs in orbit:
- Notice: a temperature and humidity sensor, or an air-quality sensor, picks up something real in the room.
- Measure: the board turns that into a number that changes as conditions change.
- Report: the reading travels to a phone or a dashboard, where the child watches it move live.
When a child breathes warm air near the sensor and watches the temperature climb on the screen across the room, the penny drops. They have built, on a desk in Dubai, a small relative of a machine keeping watch from orbit. The scale could not be more different. The idea inside them is the same.

Why this matters in a Dubai climate
There is a reason this kind of project lands well here. Children in Dubai already feel the weather in a way that makes sensors easy to care about. They know what the heat does. So a station that measures temperature and humidity, or watches the air on a dusty day, is not abstract. It is measuring the world right outside the window.
That connection does real things for a young learner:
- It makes the data feel honest. The number on the screen matches what the child can feel, so the science is not just words.
- It teaches them to ask good questions. Why is the humidity higher near the kitchen? Why does the reading drop when the AC kicks in?
- It shows them the same skill scales, from a sensor watching one room to sensors watching a city, or a planet.
Your child does not need to be top of the maths class for any of this. A bit of curiosity about the world around them is enough to start. We keep the groups small, so every child has the hardware in their own hands rather than watching someone else take the turn.
How the classes run
We teach this two ways. Children right across the UAE join live online sessions, with a teacher watching their screen and guiding them step by step, so a child in Sharjah or Abu Dhabi builds the same sensor station as one in our Dubai room. For families who prefer it, we run in-person sessions in Dubai. In the hot months that is a genuine comfort, real hardware and real teaching, indoors and out of the heat.
There are weekend and after-school batches, so the classes fit around school rather than fighting it. The hardware is real, too. Arduino, ESP32, proper temperature, humidity and air sensors, the same parts working engineers use, sized and explained for children aged six to seventeen.
From the solar wind to the windowsill
SMILE will spend its mission far above us, watching the Sun's wind meet Earth's shield and reporting back what it finds. It is a big, careful piece of science, but the idea inside it is small enough for a child to hold.
A child who builds one sensor reporting a reading to a screen this term has understood, properly, the same principle that runs a spacecraft studying space weather and an air monitor on a Dubai balcony alike. That is a real foundation, and it starts with one little board on a table here in Dubai.
